傑出的愛爾蘭著名歷史學家，古典學者，研究拜占庭的專家和語言學家。
生平
1885年24歲的時候成為該學院的研究員。1893年擔任三一學院現代歷史講座的主席。他在這個職位上講授了8年。1898年他被任命為三一學院的欽定希臘文教授。這個職務與他的歷史教授職務同時進行。1902年他成為劍橋大學的欽定現代歷史教授。
伯里一直在劍橋工作，直到他在65歲在羅馬去世。他被安葬在那裡的基督教公墓。
著作
伯里的著作的範圍，從古代希臘史一直到十九世紀的教會史，他的著作是學者和門外漢都喜愛的。他的兩部歷史哲學著作闡明了維多利亞時代的進步和理性的理想，這兩種思想指導著其餘歷史著作的思想。他還復興了拜占庭研究，引進了研究拜占庭管理制度的方法。在說英語的歷史學家當中，從吉本開始，拜占庭研究很大程度上被忽視。他有貢獻，親自和Frank Adcock and S. A. Cook 發表了這個主題的文章，在1911年的大英百科全書里。他編輯了劍橋古代史，出版於1919年。
